I’ve heard so many people, mainly women say, “I just don’t know where to start or how to put it all together.” Well guess what ladies? I’m here to hopefully help you “get started” or “put it all together.” I wanted to share where I find my decorating inspiration, ideas, etc.
One of my favorite sources of inspiration is Houzz. It’s so awesome. It’s sort of like Pinterest but WAY better… and different. There’s only pictures of homes, nothing else. You can create idea books and save your photos, plus add your own text to each picture so that you’ll remember why you saved that particular picture. Another really cool feature is that you can ask questions about photos, like paint color, the source for a couch, countertop material, etc. Most of the time, not always, the contractor, home owner, or designer will respond to you fairly quickly with an answer. Here are my idea books.
One was just for fun and the other is full of ideas for our new-to-us house. If you have never been to Houzz, beware……. it’s SO dangerous and kind of addicting. One more thing I love about their site is getting their weekly email that has articles that are very interesting and helpful. For example,
It’s just the good old fashioned way. When I was still in high school and living at home, I started clipping articles and pictures out of magazines. I had a little decorative binder that I put all my “finds” in. I like finding inspiration and ideas in magazines to this day. Sadly, my little inspiration book didn’t survive the house fire. That just gives me an excuse to start on another one. Some of my favorite magazines include Better Homes and Garden, Southern Living, HGTV, Real Simple and many more. I also love to look through retail magazines, such as Pottery Barn, Ballard Design, West Elm, Grandin Road, etc., etc., etc.!
If you are a woman with a pulse, I’m sure you’ve heard of Pinterest. And you are probably an avid user… is that correct?! I find inspiration as well as how-tos on there. It helped us in building the Little Pink Tent, among other things. I think it’s safe to say that everyone knows how pretty cool it is!
I had a few pretty good design/DIY books before our previous home caught fire that I really enjoyed looking through. I looked at them over and over and over again and saw something different every time. I picked up a Pottery Barn bathroom inspiration book at a thrift store one time that was hard backed. It had some awesome, timeless bathrooms featured in it. I even displayed it in my laundry room… yeah, I liked it that much!
I’ve been finding a good bit of inspiration from nature lately. These pictures have inspired me to add some bright colored accents to our house in the future.
I might even use them as art in our house. But seriously though, you can gather SO much inspiration from nature itself. The blue sky, a beautiful sunset, flowers, animals, textures, etc. Endless possibilities!
We love traveling! I cannot imagine NOT wanting to travel and see different parts of the world. I say “God didn’t create so many beautiful places to NOT be enjoyed.” Every time we are on vacation, I find inspiration one way or another. We visited a park in Ft. Lauderdale last summer while I was there for work and picked up some really interesting, colorful leaves. I covered them in Mod Podge and framed then in a clear frame. I think?! it might have survived the fire. If I can find it somewhere, I will show it off!
Now, as I hang my head in shame, I must admit that I find tons of inspiration at T.J. Maxx. I MUST be an illness. It’s okay though. J.C. knows about T.J.! I must have a thing for guys with initials. Anyways, it’s my favorite store of all times and it always gets my creative juices flowing. So much goodness!
Last but definitely not least is other bloggers and their own fabulous blogs. These are my favorites and ones I follow regularly. I’ve linked to their blogs so you can check them out and see how FAB they really are!
Some of these blogs are actually the reason I started my own blog. They gave me the inspiration I needed to take the very first, scary step. So, where do you find inspiration or is it something you’ve had a difficult time with? Maybe I’ve given you a little direction today to get you headed in the right way. Please leave a comment below if you have any questions. I will do my best to answer them!
