I mentioned here and here that I would be traveling to California in May. My day job, Marketing Director at a credit union, is really good about investing in their employees. I attended my third and final year of credit union marketing school in Los Angeles. Thanks boss! J.C. works from dusk till dawn most days this time of year, so I invited my mother to come along.
We had one full day to see the town before I started school on Monday. Then, every evening, we would hit the streets again. I took LOTS of pictures and wanted to share them with you guys. We did some really neat things.
We got there on a Saturday around 3pm and headed to our hotel, the Loew’s Hollywood. It was very nice and sat directly on Hollywood Boulevard. It had lots of bells and whistles, including the Hollywood and Highland Center. There were three stories of food, shopping, and entertainment literally connected to our hotel.
That night, we found a little place to eat and then hit Hollywood Boulevard. First up, we ran into Bumble Bee.
And then Mr. Muscles… that had a pot belly 🙂
Our hotel was practically inches from the Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the Hollywood Walk of Fame was under our feet at all times…
OMG! Look, it’s my name… spelled exactly the way I spell it! And here’s a glimpse at the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
That night… we had a FABULOUS dinner. A sea salt caramel sundae from the Ghirardelli Chocolate Store soda shop. I am not a big sweets person; however, I do like salt… it was scrumptious. That place was a chocoholic’s best dream and nightmare, all at the same time. Just ask my mom 🙂
The next day was our first and only free day. I didn’t have to attend school that day… so we had the WHOLE day to hit the town. We purchased tickets online before we left to ride the Hop-On/Hop-Off Tour Bus from Starline Tours. Riding it allows you to see the whole town for around $45. If you ever visit, buy your tickets online in advance to receive a discount. The pass is good for 24 hours. You can hop-on or hop-off at any stop along the routes. Buses come around every 15-40 minutes. We made a few stops and had a blast at each of them.
One of the first things we saw on the bus tour was this…
Okay, so it’s a gas station… but if you look beyond the gas station and you zoom in, you see this.
Do you know what house that is? It’s Iron Man’s house. The exact house they used on the movie. They changed it up a bit AND it’s not on the ocean like it was in the movie. Sorry to bust your bubble.
Next up we saw the House of Blues and a motel that was used in one of the Ocean’s movies.. you know, Ocean’s 11, 12, 13, and 4,396. Yeah, those movies!
Then we saw the Chateau Marmont, which is where famous people hang out. It’s actually a hotel you can stay in, but I bet it’s expensive.
Next up, Hollywood! It was pretty there and some places were pretty ritzy! These were a few of the shops on Rodeo Drive. I wanted to go in, but knew I wouldn’t want to afford the hefty price tags, so we didn’t 🙂
The community center and city hall were GORGEOUS!
Aren’t they fab?! Before too long, we were headed down a hilly road and I caught a glimpse of this…
Can you see it? It’s Santa Monica beach. My favorite place out there!
It was SO beautiful there. Have you ever been? The blue water, the cool wind, and the mountains. I think J.C. and I should move there.
And then there was this… a memorial to our fallen troops. It was very special, especially since my both of my brothers, my sister-in-law, and both grandfathers served our country.
Next up, Third Street Promenade, baby!!!! I could have lived there too. It was all the shopping a girl could want! We got a chance to shop at Anthropologie, which I was super excited about!
One night we went to see Porgy and Bess. It was so good. Both mom and I really enjoyed the show. We couldn’t take pictures during the show, so this is the best I got!
Wanna know something really cool? There’s this thing in the smack dab middle of the city that produces tar. It’s called the La Brea Tar Pits. It’s just this pit with tar bubbling up out of the ground. They have excavated all kind of fossils out of there, saber tooth tigers, elephants, mammoths, etc. It was pretty cool.
Then there was this. It’s from the Panini Café. Don’t miss it when you go!
Well, I will leave you on a good note… and possibly hungry! We had a wonderful time and I loved spending time with my mom! I can’t wait to take J.C. to California. I dream of taking Hwy 1 up the west coast… and Lake Tahoe… and the Sequoias… and the Redwoods… and probably something else too 🙂
So, have you been to California? The Los Angeles area to be exact?! Would you even like to visit? Most people don’t give California or L.A. a chance… but you should!
P.S. Since the beginning, I have mostly posted 5 days a week, Monday – Friday. The next couple of weeks are going to be super busy for us with Bible School, a destination wedding, etc., etc., etc.! So, what I’m trying to say is that I will probably only post 4 days a week for the next 2 or 3 weeks. Hope that’s okay with you guys!
