Cookin’ in the Kitchn’

So… as you may know, we are in our new house now. We have LOTS of work to do! I thought about giving you a full house tour in one single post, but that might get a little boring because everthing looks the same. I don’t mean that in a bad way but there is a LOT of dark paneling in every room… things start to run together and then your brain gets foggy. NO BUENO! Therefore, I will show you each room in seperate posts. Let’s start with the kitchen shall we.

This is a “wide view” of our kitchen.  A few things have changed since I took this picture.  The “stuff” has been moved out, the carpet has been ripped up and last but definitely not least… the wallpaper border has been removed.  It was REALLY STUCK ON THERE!  I had to purchase a steamer from Home Depot for removal.  It was no joke!  Also, we will remove those cabinets that come out across the top and the bottom.  I can’t see past them and when the fridge is in place it makes the kitchen extremely closed off.  We plan on “hand crafting” an island later on that can be used as a workspace and a bar to eat at… or a place to sit down and chat with the cook 🙂

This will also open up the kitchen so it feels like once space with the dining room.  I like for everything to be open and airy and we think this will be the perfect solution.

This gives you a closer look into the kitchen.  The sink is perfectly placed under the window… the dishwasher is to the right of the sink.  The fridge is on the right and the stove lives on the left.

Fridge nook.  Want to know a little secret?  Our fridge doesn’t fit 🙂

So, we are going to have to do some “rigging” to make it work…. I’m kinda hoping it won’t work so I can get a nice new fridge, but DON’T tell J.C.!

Last but not least… the ceiling fan… that people hit their heads on!  Health hazard.

We are very excited about transforming this space and making it OURS!  We easily agreed on most things in this room and then I compromised, gave in, and told J.C., “I guess we can get a farmhouse sink…”  It’s nice to let somebody else win every once and a while.  Try it!  It will make you feel good!

So, I put together a mood board for this space!

1. Fan  2. Kitchen Inspiration  3. Eider White Paint- SW  4. Kitchen Inspiration  5. Hardware  6. Light

The fan, hardware, and light have already been purchased.  We will paint the cabinets and header (where the border previously “hung out”) all the same color.  It will be white and come from Sherwin Williams.  I am contemplating Snowbound.  I need to get a test post and try it out to see what I/we think.  We plan on doing butcher block countertops and white subway tile with warm gray grout for the backsplash.  Our countertops will be walnut so they will be much darker and warmer than the inpiration photo (2).  The Eider white paint will be on the walls for those of you wondering.  The hardware will replace the current handles on the drawers.  We will also be replacing the handles on the doors with some fancy little knobs.  The light fixture will hang over the sink and the fan will replace the current fan.

We would love to cover the popcorn ceilings with something like this-

Aren’t those ceilings LOVELY?  #swoon  We also hope to add some recessed lighting as we see fit.

So, what do you think?  Looks like a lot of work doesn’t it?!  I have a feeling that we will have a lot of hard work ahead of us… but that’s okay.  I love taking something old and turning it into something new! The feeling of gratification makes me smile! It might be hard work, but in the long run it pays off! Do you think we are crazy for getting rid of those cabinets and opening things up? Leave a comment below and tell me what you think of the mood board!!
